Shanghai is well-known as the business center and the top fashion capital in China. Shanghai Fashion Week held twice in a year which contributed a large part to the China's fashion industry is becoming more and more prominent. While the spending power of its citizens is increasing, people began to think whether Shanghai could be the next fashion capital or not?Since high-end retail chains have recently entered the Chinese market in Shanghai where became the primary trade centre of China as well as regional center of huge global brands, fashion houses and many more. However, Xiangyang pointed out that Shanghai had some missing characteristics that is important for a fashion capital."First, the consumption values of the Shanghainese are still dominated by Western influence and are not yet Chinese in nature. Second, Shanghai has not yet become a creative center known by international designers. Third, Shanghai needs to have its own globally influential fashion brands. Finally, the retail environment has yet to mature to give more room to small brand names"(Bian, 2009). |

What is required to turn Shanghai into a global fashion center? From the fashion critic Bao Mingxin Posted:" As a cultural phenomenon, fashion needs to be cultivated in a specific environment. The reason Paris has become the world's fashion center is that it has sophisticated consumers and a fashion circle consisting of artists, designers, photographers, fashion models and retailers etc. In this environment, fashion designers need teamworks rather than working in isolation." However, there are more and more Chinese designers graduated from fashion institutes like LCF, FIT. Those designers still work from design to produce and sell their products on their own. Although facing of such a dilemma, the growth rate of Chinese market is large and extremely fast. Besides, there are a large number of designers returned to the Chinese fashion industry. Shanghai becomes the next fashion capital should be just around the corner. |
